Your family have a long and honourable history. The weight of the ages bears down upon you. For generations your family have held to the old ways, even when it meant they did not rise as high as others in the eyes of the council. So it was with your grandfather. He was a warrior in service to the small army led by Durok Gammon during the invasion of the Glacial plains. While laying siege to a sacred Ignoi holding by the Taedon Meltriver, your father was in a small troop overrun by a surprise attack. He survived only because of the quick thinking of Akizellian Ironcore. After he was healed, he returned to duty, and served under Akizellian for the rest of his career. He never managed to repay his life-debt to Akizellian, and after his death, the debt fell to your father.
Your father tried to serve Akizellian’s son, Calpurn, but Calpurn was a man of religion, and did not require your father’s help. When he died, your father was at a loss, for Calpurn had ‘put it about a bit’, and there were several heirs of his body. The eldest, a young man named Marellian, was a feeble, bookish sort, who ran away from your father when he tried to approach him about the subject. So, instead of serving Marellian as his shield man, he had to resort to guarding him from afar.
Now, your father is dead, after a long and healthy life. It is up to you to continue your family’s tradition. You found out that both Marellian and a half sister of his called Loraella have recently been given special duties by the council, and you have put yourself forward to join them on whatever the council has asked. Maybe this will give you opportunity to repay the debt.
